The National Football League has levied a substantial $250,000 fine on Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for an action he claims was an “inadvertent” offensive hand signal made toward attendees during a Sunday’s contest at MetLife Stadium.
Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture toward opposing supporters, though he maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans present at the game as his team clinched a decisive win.
“It was regrettable. That was essentially an exchange with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was filled with excitement for the Cowboys.”
He further clarified that the signal was completely accidental, occurring amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I simply put up the incorrect finger,” he noted. “The action was accidentally performed. I’m not kidding. Should you call it unplanned, you can. But it got resolved pretty quick.”
Historical Precedent for Proprietor Fines
This is not the initial instance an NFL owner has been fined for misconduct. Previous cases include:
- Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at spectators in early 2024.
- Former Titans proprietor Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable offensive signal.
Jones, a figure who is recognized for his publicity flair, reportedly has an estimated wealth of around $16bn, so the fine manageable for the billionaire proprietor.
